Teachers PageBetty Wilson
From the beginning, watercolor has been my medium of choice because of its spontaneity. The process of creating a new painting is exciting, fun, and full of drama and intrigue. It is like solving a great mystery or reading a good novel, only I get to write the storyline.
I have transitioned from only painting miniatures on dry paper in a traditional style to painting "full sheets" on wet paper using a loose style. Today, in addition to painting on paper, I paint on surfaces like watercolor canvas, clayboard, Masa paper, RTISTX board, illustration board, and Bristol board. I experiment with mixed media, collage, inks, dyes, oriental papers, other substances and I use a variety of tools to create texture. I enjoy creating bright, colorful, textured, mostly realistic, images that are interesting to look at.
By using a wet-into-wet process, different surfaces, and a variety of pigments and tools, I am able to create paintings which look complicated but which are actually very simple in construction. Because of the interaction between the water, pigments and surfaces, a painting almost "creates itself".
For the most part, I am a self-taught artist. The teachers who have influenced me the most are Cecy Turner and Terry Madden. In response to their kindness and patience and their structured teaching methods, I connected with watercolor and developed a passion for it. I paint, draw and read about watercolor and art daily. I also am a great fan of Betty Denton (www.bettydeonton.com) , Nita Leland (www.nitaleland.com) and Karlyn Holman (www.karlynholman.com) and I continue to gain inspiration from their books. My favorite painting subject has always been florals.
My greatest joy in painting comes from making new creative discoveries and sharing these discoveries with others. Teaching has always been and will always be my passion.
